MediHome Nurses have been caring for
patients following planned operations since 2003. This is
part of a general trend in elective surgery that has seen an
increasing number of operations undertaken as day cases.
Many patients require continued
support from nurses to help manage acute pain, deliver powerful
drugs, administer drips, tend to wound drains and change
dressings. With input from MediHome Nurses, which can be
intensive with up to 4 visits a day for a patient immediately
after they return home, it is possible for most patients to return
home within no more than a few days of even the most major
operation and for many to return home either on the same day or
the day immediately following their operation.
MediHome Nurses undertake a
comprehensive assessment of the patient's home circumstances ahead
of a planned operation to determine when the patient should be
able to go home. The MediHome Nurse meets the patient when
they come home to settle them in, and will then visit regularly
through the period of recovery attending to medical needs, feeding
back information about the recovery to the doctors, and with the
assistance of a health care assistant, helping with personal care
including washing, dressing and meals. MediHome
physiotherapists will also attend to assist in recovery where
appropriate.
