An eight year study at Stockholm's Karolinksa Institute of home care versus hospital care patients with acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) has found that clinical outcomes were materially better for home care patients, with 5 year survival rates 38% higher for home care patients than the hospital care control group.
The research team noted a high level of correlation between calorie intake and the number of days of home care compared to hospital care and conclude that "Better oral nutrition may be one reason for the reduced probability of acute GVHD and better survival with at-home care than with hospital care."
